Need a Drink? Quit Drinking & Replace it With Something Better!

Whatever makes people drink too much, in my mind there is some void.  Something that is missing in their life, whether it is from the root of their being -- a lack of self-esteem, all the way to being lonely, discouragement, or just plain boredom, there is a cause.

While there are many things we can't control in our lives - so many - we actually are or sure as hell should be in control of our actions.  As they say at Al-Anon, (sic) 'You can't change anybody else, all you can do is change how you deal with them'.

So this can apply to you and dealing with your problems - while you may not be able to find anybody to love you right now, or you are stuck in a job or relationship that is making you unhappy, or whatever - you can still control how you respond to the catalyst of your particular irritant in a different way if you quit drinking.

When you feel the urge to medicate your pain with a drink (and you know you can't just have one or two), try something else to change your mood.  Just jump out and go for a long walk. Get some fresh air and see something picturesque like trees or water. Or treat yourself to a really good meal out someplace and chase it down with something good to drink like flavored mineral water, fancy coffee drink, or a big chocolate milkshake.. Whatever floats your boat as they say - just do it until the urge to have a drink passes.

You might look into Cognitive Behavior Therapy because they do things like this where when people suffer from compulsive disorders they help them get through the impulses just by (1) replacing something negative with something positive (thoughts/actions) or (2) practicing NOT doing what they are obsessed to do enough times that they break the pattern.

While you may not have ever been diagnosed as 'compulsive obsessive' you know logically, to some degree, if you CAN'T or WON'T Quit Drinking too much, that it is a compulsion; and that since you drink too much whenever you drink that you are obsessive.  Admit it.
